End of an Era - Farewell to Our Two Margaret’s
It truly is the end of an era here at Hawthorndale Care Village, as we say farewell to not one, but two of our much-loved wahine – our Manager ‘Da Boss’ Margaret Brown and Financial Whiz Margaret Nicoll who are both retiring after more than 17 years of dedicated service.
Both began their journey at Calvary Hospital, before becoming instrumental in the transition and move to Hawthorndale Care Village. They have both played an enormous part in shaping Hawthorndale into the warm, welcoming place it is today.
Margaret Brown’s leadership, knowledge, and steady presence helped ensure that our values of care, compassion, and community carried seamlessly into this new chapter and we hope that the strong foundations she has built - and her vision for the Village - continue to guide us forward.
Through many years of change, both Margaret’s remained steadfast, capable, and deeply committed. Their professionalism, warmth, and work ethic have set an incredibly high standard for everyone who follows.
Both are looking forward to well-earned freedom: Margaret Nicoll to relax, spend time with her family and enjoy her garden at home and Margaret Brown to spend more time with Bernie and out in nature exploring the tracks and trails she loves.
Of course, it won’t just be the Margarets we’ll be missing – Margaret Brown’s loyal four-legged companion Jack has also been a much-loved part of daily life at Hawthorndale. Jack’s friendly face and gentle nature have brought countless smiles to Residents, staff, families, and visitors alike. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of sharing in his company.
On behalf of everyone at Hawthorndale, thank you, Margaret and Margaret, for your incredible years of service, loyalty, and friendship. Your contribution and legacy will be felt for many years to come. Wishing you both every happiness and adventure in your next chapter – you have truly earned it.
Looking ahead, we’re delighted to welcome Lynley Irvine, who will join us in February 2026 as our new General Manager. In the meantime, Louise Slocombe will step in as Interim Manager, ensuring a smooth transition.
We’re also pleased that Christine Livingstone, who has been part of our Finance team since before the move to the village, will continue to lead all things financial following Margaret Nicoll’s retirement.
While we close this remarkable chapter with immense gratitude, we look forward to the new beginnings ahead.
